Pore size determines protection from allergens. If you are looking at just dust mites, the 6 microns will be adequate. However, if you are also allergic to molds and pet dander then you want a pore size of less than 3 microns. The size of the pore does not affect breathability - the material used in making the cover decides this. Microfibre is the most breathable.

You can get at wal-mart and your best bet is to get the kind that covers the whole mattress and zips on. my oldest has to have one and it worked great and here they are only like 5-6 bucks, and saves a mattress, but definetly get the zip ones. Actually I have them on all 3 of my kids beds!!!.

Hey gurl....since the mites and their business come from the mattress, you probably do need the dust mite mattress cover....I would not get one off Ebay though. It does sound like your doctor gets a cut off every one they sell. Go someplace he did not recommend, hahaa.
