Stolen Marilyn Mural Found Wrapped in Bed Sheets, Tape

Marilyn Monroe was found in an alley, behind a dumpster, swathed in bedsheets.

The mural, created by Paul Archer, was stolen from the outside wall of Floyd's Diner two weeks ago.

A tip led to the discovery of the mural this week. It's now sitting in the manager's office of the restaurant, and will be erected again on the wall of the diner at the corner of Yates and Quadra streets once a fresh coat of paint goes on.

The mural depicts Monroe in bed, covered by a silk bed sheet, as she cracks an egg into a cup. People either love it or hate it, Archer said.

The whole episode has its funny elements, the artist said. "She was kidnapped ... and found next to a dumpster in old bedsheets and duct tape." Archer was told a homeless person tipped off the restaurant management to the mural's location.

The mural suffered minor damage when it was removed from the wall.

John Watson, the manager of Floyd's Diner, said the restaurant is happy to have the mural back.

"At first, it was a double-edged sword, because it was great publicity but we also really wanted her back," Watson said.

The diner owner and management are discussing ways to attach alarms to the mural so it can't be taken again.

Victoria police are investigating the theft.
