If you can not wash them every week give them a good shaking or an airing. Pehaps change the sheets a couple of time a week
1. Where can I find a plastic mattress cover, or some type of thick padding to put on a twin size bed?
You can get at wal-mart and your best bet is to get the kind that covers the whole mattress and zips on. my oldest has to have one and it worked great and here they are only like 5-6 bucks, and saves a mattress, but definetly get the zip ones. Actually I have them on all 3 of my kids beds!!!.
2. Is the fitted sheet the sheet that covers the mattress cover?
It fits over both, the corners should all tuck in to keep the sheet taut
3. can you clean a goose down mattress cover at home? or it has to be taken to the cleaners.?
you can buy a product at home store that is "home dry cleaning"...I forget what it is called, but I do know they make it. Check out Walmart or local grocery store in laundry section.
4. Everyone tells me a mattress cover will solve my futon lumps but won't the bumps just go through the cover?
those old lumps will still be there. for the price of a mattress cover you could buy a 2 inch foam and cover it with that..it would be really cozy but still quite firm
5. Do you think a second mattress cover would help?
That's a great idea. They make mattress covers with a plastic lining...you might want to try that. Good luck
6. What is the best heated mattress cover you have heard of?
Try consumerreports.org, a great site, I use it all the time!
7. Did anyone else buy a babesafe crib mattress cover because you are terrified of SIDS?
This is just my opinion. I see a lot of "SIDS" cases. As long as your baby's lungs are matured, you do not put him face down. or kill a child by placing a pillow or blanket over it, it is highly unlikely. Most cases are people who kill their children. It is hard to prove.
8. How to Quickly Change Crib Sheets When There's a Nighttime Diaper Leak
If your baby has a diaper leak in the middle of the night, the traditional options have been to 1) replace the crib sheet with a clean one in the rare case your sleep-deprived brain has remembered to keep a spare, or 2) do laundry and sob. (You can not just drape any old blanket on the bare mattress and say "see ya in the morning"-it could be a choking hazard.) However, you can can save yourself from either of these situations by making "crib sheet lasagna." No, I do not mean you should numb your pee-stained sorrows by stuffing your face with lasagna. This is how crib sheet lasagna works works (thanks to Asha Dornfest's Parent Hacks for the catchy name): Before bedtime, you place a waterproof mattress cover on the mattress, and then a regular crib sheet over it, and then another waterproof mattress cover over that, followed by another regular crib sheet. (You can keep going, if you would like, until it gets too bulky.) Get it? Multiple layers, like lasagna. Then at night, when your baby has a diaper leak (or gets sick and throws up), you simply pull off the top sheet and mattress cover, toss them in the hamper, and go back to sleep. Alternately, you can use puppy training pads in place of waterproof crib sheets. After a leak, just take off the top sheet and throw out the puppy pad, and you are good to go. If you are experiencing a string of leaks, however, you will want to address the problem at the diaper level. Try making a double diaper, adding a diaper booster pad or moving up to the next diaper size. As a parent, there will be plenty of reasons you will be awake in the middle of the night. May leakage not be one of them.
9. How do I eliminate body odor from my bedroom?
What you need to find out, is where the odor is coming from. You say it's 'body odor' but it may be mildew. Smell around the room to determine the source. Wash your sheets, pillowcases, and mattress cover, if you have one. Vacuum the mattress as well as you can (it may be time for a new one). What usually smells the most in bedrooms, is the rug. I would recommend going to your local supermarket and asking about steam cleaner rentals (pretty cheap: like 40 bucks to rent the machine, and another 20-30 bucks for the cleaner you need to run it). Read the instructions. A good odor cover-up for the rug after it dries, is a powder room-deodorizer. Follow the instructions for that as well. Wipe all surfaces in the room with a rag and some lysol. If you have non-rug floor-surfaces in the room, wipe those as well (pledge or lestoil, depending on what kind of surface it is.) Follow this up with a few sprays of febreeze (works awesome). Good luck.
