How to Find the Perfect Cotton Bathrobe

If I had a single entrepreneurial fibre in my body, I would have come home from India with a thousand of the floral, ankle-length cotton bathrobes I saw in Anokhi, instead of just the one. Do not you love the name, which has got nothing to do with the really rather orderly stock inside? Anokhi sells gorgeously Liberty-esque fine cottons handmade by craftspeople - the kind that are so hard to find here and cost a bomb. I think my bathrobe was 12. I could have had a business. Who knew that pure cotton - as opposed to cotton towelling or terry cotton or percale cotton - was such a luxury? I've searched high and low for similar cotton bathrobes - and you would have thought Liberty would have been a no-brainer. Araks, a hip New York store, does them, and sometimes sells them in the UK through Fenwick, Harvey Nichols and Couverture & the Garbstore. They are beautiful, peachy-soft cottons; but I wo not lie - they are mighty pricey. As for men, the closest I came to a fine cotton robe in London for my husband was a thick cotton one by Derek Rose in Selfridges. It was 200 and huge. I will put this dearth of affordable cotton bathrobes down not to incompetence but to a lack of lateral thinking.

I love using the pads with my Clinique Clarifying Lotion. They are just easier to use; less messy, quicker application etc. It's totally a preference thing though... :) xox

5. How can I tell if fabric is "100% cotton" if it doesn't say it is?

I do this over the sink, just in case. Cut off a small swatch of your fabric (about 1/2" x 3" should do). Light a match and touch it to the edge of your swatch so it starts on fire, then blow it out quickly. If the edge remains soft and the ashy edge just crumbles away, it's cotton. Otherwise, if it gets a hard edge, it's a blend. Cotton is a natural fiber. It is more forgiving in your piecing. If you use poly blends in with your cotton, they will not shrink at the same rate, and they also do not fade like cottons do. So, if you were to use both 100% cottons and blends, your blends over time would look very bright and out of place compared to their cotton neighbors. A lot of quilter's are purists. :) They use cotton because that's what their ancestors used. (But also because it IS superior to blends in quilt making)

6. how to patch oilskin duster?

From what I have been able to find out, oilskin is usually, nowadays cotton treated on the outside with paraffin and oil. I would go to a sewing store or fabric store, they sell pre-made patches, usually they are ironed on but they will not hold on a slick surface such as yours. Buy a package of cotton patches for the elbow and also buy at a hardware store some paraffin and a brush. Melt some paraffin at low heat and brush onto one side of the patch. It will be easier after it has been sewn on to the coat, as the wax will seal the stitching too. Use only a small amount of paraffin and mix it with some linseed oil after it has cooled a bit, otherwise its highly flammable in its hot state. So, brush it on the elbow patches, not too thickly after the patches have been sewn on
